Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

From Henry's personal library

It's a pity that this game had great potential, but it was wasted. The plot is very creative in creating a conspiracy in which Darth Vader has secret plans and a secret apprentice. It blends well with the ending of he original trilogy, when Darth Vader abandons the dark side in his redemption arch.

The game follows an outdated design pattern from the PS2 generation. It's pure hack 'n' slash till the end. It's progress through a level, fight a boss at the end, watch some cinematics and buy some upgrades, repeat for the next level. There are some obstacles that require the force powers, but nothing really stands out. The level design is basically linear and all you ever do is move forwards. Here and there they placed some secrets. If you compare this to Knights of the Old Republic and Jedi Academy it's a huge leap in terms of animations, graphics, much larger environments and hordes of enemies. However, it's a very repetitive game.

The environment art was very good. It's a pity that they did invest in Havok, Euphoria, but forgot about the gameplay. It has upgrades, but it's a pretty linear and shallow experience. There are fights with dozens of enemies, but they don't offer more than hack and slash. Some obstacles are plain "use force push and pull just to connect this or open this door". Nothing that really makes the player think through.

I dropped around chapter 3 and watched the rest in some channel.

The PC port is bad, it lacks a cursor!
